What’s happening today
So I’m sitting here while Dalton and Michelle watch a movie, might as well post something while I have access.
Today we went into town as D got his car registered. I would consider it possibly the most genuine Japanese experiences we’ve gotten yet.
We drove through an industrial area, past many businesses with trucks loading/unloading stuff. One thing that amazed me was the trucks that, instead of having a door at the back, opened up from the sides, the whole side of the cargo area opening up like gull-winged doors.
We ate at a place called “Joy”. This was nowhere near the tourist part, so the menus didn’t have pictures. Dalton’s not that experienced with reading katakana or kanji, but he was able to sound out “hamburger” on one of them, so, knowing that I wasn’t going to get anything like the American equivalent, I ordered that. Michelle ordered something else random, as did Dalton. Michelle also ordered Sake, I orderd a Kirin beer. I suddenly realized something that had been bothering me a little bit. I’ve been drinking some rolling rock in the room but not getting drunk. Duh, my mountain-acclimated bloodstream has made it impossible for me to get drunk here at 300 feet above sea level. I’ll surely be a cheap drunk when we return.
Lunch arrived, and my “hamburger” was about what I would call “salisbury steak”, being served on a plate with gravy with mushrooms in it, salad with the kind of ginger dressing I love from Sonoda’s, and miso soup in a coffee cup. Michelle ended up with fried mussels which were yummy, and Dalton got some kind of beef chunks with gravy. They got chop sticks, I was given fork and knife.
I learned today that public toilets have some intriciacies that aren’t immediately obvious. The toilet is sometimes like a hole in the ground, you have to squat. To flush, you get a different flush depending on which way you turn the handle.
I bought some smokes, a brand called “Peace”. I think they’re stronger than we’re used to. M couldnt even take more than a few drags on one (32o yen for a whole pack) so decided to get Camel “Nutty” Menthol. She couldnt finish that, either. Perhaps she’s done wiht cigs.
Anyways, i think it’s time for dinner, so I’m gonna sign this off..
