back to kindergarten..

My kindergarten story is a bit more convoluted..

My mom and dad met in the Air Force. Mom grew up in Bay City, Michigan and the Air Force was a way to get the hell outa town. My dad graduated from Brooklyn Technical High School, so the Air Force was a source for technical training. After my dad got out of the Air Force, we moved to New York City in the upstairs of my grampa’s house. Houses in this area tended to have one living space on the main floor, and another apartment upstairs. After the service, my father got a job at Bell Labs (which years later is now Avaya) in NYC.

When it came time to go to school, the rules of who starts when were such that I got to start school when I was 4. NY state used December 31 as the cutoff date, so i would have graduated a year earlier had we stayed in NY. I went to the first few months, then in December of that year we moved to Michigan for my father’s job transfer to Michigan Bell. Michigan had rules where the cutoff date was November 30, so I wasn’t old enoughto be in Kindergarten there. So my mom got to deal with me for another 6-8 months. I started school at that place (which was in Berkley, Michigan). In December, the lease was up on the rental house we moved into and we bought a house, so when we moved, I ended up finishing kindergarten at the school that I did first grade in.

So I tell this story quickly as “it took me three schools to finish kindergarten”.
