You might not know this, but you can take the values you get from your cheapy $80 handheld gps and put them directly into google maps to get a map of that spot.
I can now take pictures and take gps coordinates and literally take
you to the place where things happened. With my little $80 Garmin E-Trex
thingie I can actually get satellite tracking inside my house, and i’m
gonna prove it. (Thank you Jean, for the wonderful xmas present from
last year.)
n 40.10985
w 104.98332
and it said it had 25 foot acuracy. Remember, this was done from
within the house (specificaly the southeast corner of inside the
house). Here we go..
well that was pretty close. By the time this makes it to flickr, this wil be the place where i point at the picture which was taken from the apparent place depicted above, looking towards the garage and barn.
This part doesnt change,probably.. i think the spn part means span
and defines how far out to go to make this place have the right amount
of context. z is prolly zoom level.
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&spn=0.012527,0.024204&t=h&z=16&iwloc=addr&layer=c&ie=UTF8
here is the exact value I put in
q=41.54392,-109.85742&
and somehow it calculated this
ll=41.543919,-109.857423&
I think it
subtracts 0.00001
adds 0.000003
That looks too simple, but I’m a simple man, lets try that on
smething we have already… here is something, “Kinetic Sculpture”.. Oh
yeah, those trippy aluminum wind sculptures. ..
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&spn=0.012527,0.024204&t=h&z=16&iwloc=addr&layer=c&ie=UTF8&q=38.78947,-104.86395&ll=38.78946,-104.863953
q=38.78947,-104.86395&ll=38.78946,-104.863953
i calculated the second value using the formula above - more
speciflcaly, just subtracting 1 arithmetically from the last digit of
the first value (borrow from the previous digit if like you would in 3rd
grade), and tacking on a 3 at the end of the second value, changing it
from a 5 decimal digit value to a 6 decimal digit value unfortunately
you can’t see the kinetic sculptures very well because they dont have
imagery at that level. Wouldnt have anything to do with the fact that
it’s near Cheyenne Mountain, home of NORAD. Nope, nothing to see here,
move on.
one more time for the world. (took this off my handheld gps memory at the girl wtih the red shoes statue of our friend from SLC as a girl.
q=35.44720,1039.64823&
ll=35.44719,139.648233
While we are in Japan, we can see how badly I am at choosing when to
actually click the coordinates. See, the deal is that i usually i am on
my way back to the car or the train or whatever and i think “hey, i
should get the GPS coordinates”.. so i turn the thing on.. of course, do
i want to stand around and wait for my GPS to home in on the satellites?
no way, so maybe i dont get aorund to clicking the waypoint until i’m
standing near a souvenir shop NEAR the big buddha, Daibutsu.
(if you click on the link.. wait..

So, kids, if you just want an image you can put in your email or im,
use this
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&spn=0.012527,0.024204&t=h&z=16&iwloc=addr&layer=c&ie=UTF8&
q=35.31567,139.53644&
ll=35.31566,139.536443
but if you wanna blog it, use something more like this.
googlemaps
